Westin Kā‘anapali Ocean Resort North
Located in West Maui, The Westin Kā‘anapali Ocean Resort Villas is a new destination timeshare resort in the Starwood Vacation Ownership portfolio. The project is located on an 11.471 acre oceanfront site in North Beach Ka’anapali. The property is zoned H-M (Hotel), and is allowed a maximum lot coverage of 30%, and a maximum height of 6 stories. The site is adjacent to the existing Westin Kā‘anapali Ocean Resort Timeshare located to the South.
Master planning of the site called for a staggered/stepped building plan. The buidling design sought to break up the building massing to appear less monolithic, create separation to neighboring timeshare properties and to soften the visual impact from the adjacent highway. The plan also oriented all units at a 45 degree angle to maximize views to the neighboring islands of Moloka‘i and Lanai allowing visitors to experience it immediately upon entry. The master plan created numerous areas of seclusion within it’s grounds, allowing them to be ‘discovered’ by it’s guests.
The major design elements of the site was heavily inspired by the Ahupua‘a, a native Hawaiian concept of land division that extended from the mountains to the sea to provide all that is needed to sustain a community. Resort entry is located at the 2nd level. The elevated entry represents the beginning of the ahupua‘a at the mountains and introduces the resort at a higher view plane enhancing a visitor’s arrival experience. Pools and water features throughout the site represent the natural streams that are found within an ahupua‘a. The experience begins with the terraced water feature at Arrival and flows through the lobby to the River Pool inspired by a tranquil river that flows through a valley. The river then flows to the Beach Pool which transitions to sand creating a seamless connection to Kā‘anapali Beach.
