Montage Kapalua Bay

Formerly the Ritz-Carlton Residences at Kapalua Bay, the Montage Kapalua Bay and Residences is located in West Maui. It is situated on just over 24 acres of dramatically sloping site overlooking Kapalua Bay.  The new destination resort is comprised of 62, two and three bedroom fractional “Club Units” and 84, three and four bedroom “Residences.”  The property also boasts a luxury Spa and members-only Beach Club.  The development of the new resort included the demolition of the Kapalua Bay Hotel.  Every effort was made to re-use, donate or recycle the building materials and contents of the hotel. Construction materials and debris were separated and reused or recycled on the project or for other projects in the vicinity, limiting impact on the island’s landfills.

The client directive was to produce an “iconic” destination resort unlike any other that unmistakably expressed the unique location of the resort.  This was the design challenge and the resulting design concept was to celebrate the Place through the architectural experience, and to present the guest with an architectural backdrop of form, images and materials inspired by this spectacular Location. In addition to the project location, one of the driving forces behind the conceptual design was paying homage to the Sea.  The two forces of “location” and “sea” became intertwined in the design, so that expressing one also involved expressing the other.  Some translate “Kapalua” to mean “embracing the Sea” in Ancient Hawaiian. The next layers of design introduced details such as the use of water in the landscaping, swimming pools, and Arrival Building water features.  It added the dimension of sound and touch of the water in addition to the visual abundance of the water on the property.
